Burt Olson is Associate Professor Emeritus in the Department of Population Health Sciences. He received his PhD in Biochemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1969. Burt joined the Department (previously the Department of Preventive Medicine) as an Assistant Professor in 1977. His research interests centered on the study of lung development, focusing on the transition to pulmonary viability and the development of neural control of breathing in neonatal life.

Professor Olson teaches and coordinates PHS 794: The Biological Basis of Population Health, which is a graduate level course offered each fall semester designed to provide familiarity with the mechanisms of the major diseases that a health professional involved in population health is likely to encounter.
