PHS Monday Seminar – John Loannidis, Stanford on Replication and Validity Issues in Observational Studies

Trained at Harvard and Tufts (internal medicine, Infectious diseases), Dr. Loannidis held positions at NIH, Johns Hopkins and Tufts. Chaired the Department of Hygiene and Epidemiology, University of Ioannina Medical School in 1999-2010 while also holding adjunct professor positions at Harvard, Tufts, and Imperial College. Moved to Stanford in 2010, initially as Director/C.F. Rehnborg Chair at Stanford Prevention Research Center, then diversified with appointments in 4 departments and membership in 8 centers/institutes at Stanford.

  1. To learn about the concepts of replication, reproducibility, and the extent of the reproducibility crisis.
  2. To understand the key validity threats to epidemiological studies and obtain estimates of their frequency.
  3. To learn about the status of initiatives that try to improve the reproducibility and validity of observational evidence.
