Title: Tobacco Intervention from an Economic Perspective: Too Little, Too Much, or Just Right?

Abstract: This talk with describe the fundamentals of economic evaluation in tobacco cessation treatment research. It will provide the cost-effectiveness results from a variety of UW Center for Tobacco Research and Interventions (UW-CTRI) studies, including studies on incentives to increase engagement with tobacco cessation counseling, medications to increase cessation rates during a tobacco quit attempt, and health system approaches to increase the reach and efficacy of tobacco cessation treatment among patients who smoke.

Learning Objectives: At the end of this session, attendees will be able to:

1. Articulate the significance of an economic approach to tobacco cessation treatment.

2. Explain how cost and efficacy outcomes are applied to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of tobacco cessation treatment.

3. Identify tobacco cessation treatment approaches that have been shown to be cost-effective in UW-CTRI studies.

Bio: Marlon P. Mundt, PhD (he/him/his) is a professor and director of health economics at the University of Wisconsin Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention. Mundt leads a program of research focused on the costs and benefits of treatments to help people stop smoking cigarettes.
