From the Sky to Underground: Labor Organizations Advancing Women Workers’ Health and Safety
This seminar will discuss industrial, building trades, and aviation labor organizations’ programs to prioritize the health and safety of women workers. We will explore grassroots, national, legislative, educational, and mentoring approaches implemented through four labor organizations: the United Steelworkers (USW); the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA); the Association of Flight Attendants (AFA-CWA); and empowHER, an organization of women in the Wisconsin Building Trades. USW, UMWA, AFA-CWA, and empowHER demonstrate a cross section of employment sectors, predominately male and predominately female workplaces, international and state-based organizations, and traditional unions, as well as labor advocacy groups, that all fight for women’s health and workplace safety.
