Title: Promoting Use of a National Hotline to Reduce Overdose Deaths in Wisconsin
Drug overdose remains the leading cause of preventable death among U.S. adults aged 25-44. The majority of overdose deaths occur deaths occur during solitary drug use, when no bystanders are available to respond with lifesaving interventions like naloxone or rescue breaths. The objective of this project is to increase use of the SafeSpot overdose response hotline in Wisconsin. Safespot is a free, nationally available, 24-7 overdose response telephone hotline that provides confidential monitoring during drug use. If a caller experiences a drug overdose during monitoring, SafeSpot facilitates a rapid local overdose response. In this project, our team will implement a multi-pronged dissemination strategy carried out in partnership with the SafeSpot and Wisconsin’s Harm Reduction Technical Assistance Centers that is guided by the Interactive Systems Framework for Dissemination and Implementation (ISF). We will also conduct a mixed methods evaluation to understand the effectiveness of our dissemination activities in increasing SafeSpot calls from people who use drugs in Wisconsin.
