Stephanie Shelton

Graduate Student in the MS Population Health program since 2016

Brief Interest Statement: I earned my BA in Sociology from Trinity University, with a desire to focus on community organizing and grassroots advocacy of underserved populations. Since graduating from college, I have worked with various underserved populations to promote English literacy skills, provide direct care of those with disabilities, and provide outreach for struggling families enrolled in Dane County's Head Start program. Likewise, I served in the Peace Corps for two years as an English language teacher trainer and a women's empowerment ambassador.

What experiences in your life led you to study population/public health? My interest in public health stemmed from my experiences serving in the Peace Corps and working for the Department of Health Services in the Division of Long Term Care. From these experiences and my undergraduate career, I developed a passion for data analysis, geospatial mapping and improving the quality of life of individuals requiring long term care services and supports.

Why did you choose UW-Madison for your degree: I chose the UW because of its excellent reputation, the dedicated faculty, and the fantastic location.

What do you hope/plan to do with your degree? I hope to make a significant, positive impact on the quality of health care received by individuals requiring long term care and supports.
