PHS Monday Seminar: Mari Palta, PhD, "Modelling Glycemic Control Across the Life Course with Type 1 Diabetes"

Abstract:

The Wisconsin Diabetes Registry Study (WDRS) is a population based incidence cohort of 542 individuals diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in southern Wisconsin between 1987 and 1992, and subsequently followed for 20+ years. We model glycemic control from the time of diagnosis, and relate it to 20-year outcomes. Results show complicated patterns of HbA1c across the life course and across different age groups. Focusing on glycemic control shortly after diagnosis, we find that early level of HbA1c as well as the speed of rise in HbA1c during the first 4 years with diabetes, predict diabetic retinopathy at 20 years’ duration. The relationship was not explained by self-management (as measured), education, residual c-peptide or other factors investigated.  Several approaches were taken to examine the impact of missing data.
