PHS Monday Seminar: Jeanne Madden, PhD "Experiences of Individuals who have Bipolar Disorder and Employer-Sponsored Insurance"

Bipolar disorder is a serious mental illness affecting 2-4% of Americans. Individuals with bipolar disorder typically require continuous access to psychiatric medications and specialists. Our PCORI-funded mixed-method study uses a large national insurance claims dataset to evaluate the impact of employer-mandated switches from traditional insurance plans to high-deductible health plans (HDHPs) on members with bipolar disorder. HDHPs are increasingly common arrangements in the US that can impose high cost-sharing requirements and barriers to obtaining needed care. In parallel with our claims-based analyses, we have conducted in-depth interviews with individuals living with bipolar disorder to understand the reality and fullness of their experiences using health insurance. Multiple stakeholder engagement components have guided our research. Dr. Madden will present findings from all aspects of this study.
