Deborah B. Ehrenthal, MD, MPH, FACP
- Associate Professor
Deborah Ehrenthal holds the Lifecourse Initiative for Healthy Families Endowed Chair at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. She received a BA in Chemistry from Wesleyan University in Connecticut and her MD from the University of Massachusetts Medical School. She completed her internship and residency training in General Internal Medicine at Yale-New Haven Hospital in Connecticut, and later received an MPH from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Before coming to UW-Madison, she worked for more than two decades as a member of the teaching faculty at the Christiana Care Health System in Newark, Delaware, a large academic community hospital.
Dr. Ehrenthal’s research uses a life course framework to investigate the determinants of health outcomes and health disparities of populations. She focuses on three intersecting areas of women’s and children’s health: perinatal outcomes, women’s cardiovascular disease, and child health. The goal of her work is to expand the evidence-base needed to guide clinical and public health recommendations and policies relevant to reproductive age women and their children. She studies health care delivery after pregnancy complications and investigates mechanistic pathways linking adverse pregnancy complications to women’s later cardiovascular disease. In addition, she has developed novel methods to use data from electronic medical records, linked to other sources, to study health care delivery and health outcomes of women and children.
