  • Visiting Associate Professor
  • Drexel University

Dr. Ana P. Martinez-Donate is a former Associate Professor in the Department of Population Health Sciences, University of Wisconsin-Madison, now at Drexel University in Philadelphia. She received a PhD in Health Psychology from Universidad Autonoma de Madrid in 1999, as well as an Expert Degree in Epidemiology from the National School of Public Health, Spain (2000). Her post-doctoral training and professional experience in the US have focused on health promotion, behavioral epidemiology, and community health. She joined the Department of Population Health Sciences, University of Wisconsin-Madison in September 2007.

Dr. Martinez-Donate's research interests range from HIV prevention to tobacco control, cancer screening, health literacy, and obesity prevention. Her work has emphasized underserved and vulnerable populations, particularly Latino immigrants and, most recently, rural populations. Dr. Martinez-Donate applies a behavioral ecological framework to the analysis of determinants of health-related behaviors and the development of community-based intervention strategies for disease prevention and health promotion.

Currently, she is serving as Principal Investigator (PI) for an NIH-funded grant aimed at estimating the risk for HIV infection, identifying risk determinants, and examining health care access among Mexican migrants in the US. She has also served as PI or Co-Investigator for several community-collaborative projects on 1) barriers to breast and cervical cancer screening among low-acculturated Latinas in the US; 2) effectiveness of lay health advisor interventions to promote cancer screening among Latinas; 3) interventions to improve the nutrition environment in restaurants and stores; 4) influence of the built environment on physical activity and obesity; and 5) health literacy barriers and patient navigation needs among rural cancer patients in Wisconsin.

Dr. Martinez-Donate has served as a member of the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Smoking Cessation in Military and Veteran Populations and is a current member of the Behavioral and Social Science Approaches to Preventing HIV/AIDS Study Section at the National Institutes of Health Center for Scientific Review.
