The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has funded a five-year multi-state program to conduct surveillance and to implement and evaluate fetal alcohol syndrome prevention and intervention projects. The UWSMPH is working as the bona fide agenct of the State Health Department in nine WI counties. The intervention “Healthy Choices,” using brief intervention and motivational interviewing approaches, is being conducted by UWSMPH partners, directed by co-PI Georgiana Wilton, Ph.D., in the Department of Family Medicine. The investigators are also conducting surveillance to estimate the prevalence of FAS in the nine county region of southeastern WI.
